Maybelline Color Sensational Lipstick in Very Cherry

Haven't I sworn off Maybelline after so many products I've tried ? I guess everything deserves a second chance (even though I hated everything I got from Maybelline). Especially it's a whole new line with some nice reviews from the online community and a fairly pretty packaging.

Anyway, I convinced myself to buy one of the new Maybelline Color Sensational Lipstick, in Very Cherry.

There are four categories for this line of Color Sensational Lipsticks, each with a different lid color: Pink (Rosy Pink lid), Mauve (Purple lid), Nude (Brown lid) and Red (Red lid). My first pick was one of those Pink lipsticks as the lid color is the prettiest in the bunch, but from the limited shades available in CVS, I didn't find a shade that I don't hate, the nude shades has getting horrible reviews in Makeup Alley (it seems that all of them are rancid) and the purple ones either look way too auntie, trashy or simply boring...

I walked home with a my last choice, a red one, the packaging of which looks very much like Lancome Color Fever lipstick (At least the others one don't look too much like copycat...) I pick the lipstick based on the name Very Cherry (635) and from the swatch board on the displayer, it looks like a cool red (cool is my safe choice when it comes to lip color) compared to the only other shimmer free shade, called "Are You Red-dy"...

Please, this is no way a cherry red ( I don't know about other places on earth, but cherries down here are all mauvy red.) a tomato, more like. And I have a little complain about the liptick tube, while it doesn't look too bad when it's new, but it gets scratched very easily and when it does, it starts to look very cheap afterward. I have a couple Anna Sui rouge, even after years of suffering, the tubes still look pretty new...Things like that doesn't happen to Stila, MAC or Lancome lipstick either...

I guess you do get what you pay for, but let's not judge the book base on its cover and head to the swatch instead:

The lip color is relatively smooth and easy to apply but the texture is not creamy nor the color is pigmented enough for me (for a lipstick!), after many layers, the opacity is still not desirable...I can still see a bit (or a good deal depends on your monitor) of cool undertone after many layers of this lipstick.

Overall, it's not a horrible lipstick, but for the $6-7 price tag (Although there is a cheap way to buy it: look for those manufactured coupon with coupon then get it when CVS slashes the price...so I got this tube for 3 bucks) and a tube that can be scratched easily , I personally think you will get better quality with a $1 Wet n Wild. If you want a good color pay off, just go for Wet n Wild and if you want a pretty tube and nice color, there are still many alternatives out there.

  1. I'm ok with this lipstick but I'm hesitant to wear it bc I hate the way it smells.

I am guessing you have one in nude? (People in makeup alley all said that those ones are rancid...) This tube I have is OK, nothing annoying as far as I am concerned.

  3. That red looks really nice on your lips! It's bolder than what I usually wear but it looks darn good on you.

  4. Hmm..wow..really ? Wet n Wild makes better lipstick compared to this? Thanks for the review! :D

  5. Hm. I don't think I would be daring enough to wear this out. The color does look pretty nice and even though!

  6. LT:
Yeah, it's actually red enough for (traditional chinese) wedding.

    Nikki:
If I just think about the stuff inside the tube, Wet n Wild is better (at least creamier)...This is not bad but the plastic lid looks so ugly after it was scratched.

I probably won't wear this one out either...I mean, I like to play with my makeup at home but I prefer bare face when I am in the public (I also prefer a few more minutes of sleep instead of looking "pretty".) so most of the time the most I have on my face is sun screen while I consume my makeup in the evening (as toys...)

Somebody who reads this blog seems to have a problem with that (me not wearing them out side that much) and think I am wasting money...I mean, what in the world does it have to do with her anyway?

  7. What about kisses with this lipstick? Look that http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yDoKSH1p_VM&feature=related video in 0:24s ;) Nice traces.

  8. Hi there:
I don't think it's THAT pigmented / creamy to leave that many lip prints (nor would the guy love the smell) but super cute commercial anyway...I don't watch that much TV so it's nice to take a loot at that!

  9. I have been reading rumors that a "bad batch" of pinks and nudes in MCSLS got shipped last year in which they forgot to put the honey nectar in it that is supposed to help the moisture, taste, and smell, but I can't find any articles or press releases to back that up, but it is a reasonable explanation. I hadn't even heard of the line until I picked up Red Revival a couple nights ago, and after trying it, I was like, "OMG! Why is my store selling an obviously 10-year-old rancid product at full price?!" and was absolutely shocked to find online that this just came out last year, *and* it was known to be rancid even last summer. Apparently another "bad batch" of it in Red Revival has also recently escaped from Maybelline; harder than an old gluestick, almost tore my lip trying to put it on, and did take off a small patch of top skin off my bottom lip; smells and tastes more nauseatingly and headache-inducingly rancid a 10-year uncapped lipstick found in grandma's drawer. Even my strongest sweet-smelling-and-tasting gloss couldn't begin to cover the rancidness, and had to remove it before it made me puke, and it did give me a headache to entire rest of the night. :-(

That's interesting story that it's rare to see a big company like Maybelline making a blooper this big. I personally am OK with the tube I have (it smells funny, but not rancid) so I didn't went for a return plus I got to for 2-3 bucks (a CVS sale plus a 2-dollar off coupon) ...I can deal with it...

  11. Well, as I am looking for a sheer bright red, I think this might be a good choice for me. Bad or not, think I will give it a try.

Well, I am guessing it's not that bad, at least it doesn't stain like max factor (but that red is gorgeous and full-on). If you are looking for a sheer enough for everyday but still kind of bright red and you don't mind glosses, you might like the L'Oreal Colour Juice lip gloss in Raspberry Smash, it's a great red to brighten up the face and I have be wearing it a lot recently.

  13. Thank you for the tip, Citrine. I will look for it on eBay (not available in my country *sigh*). I do not know why, but I just feel the need to get a perfect sheer red which will look like a jelly or something like that on my, giving me that nice natural, but done look. I only hope it is not a lost battle...

  14. i have this lipstick in the exact same color and i tend to disagree. i paid $5 and with 2 coats it completely covers my lips. ur lips must be really pigmented and i also have big lips like you. However, I agree with it not being creamy enough.

  15. I have to agree with Jessica. I can't understand what you've said about the opacity, either; I get great coverage with just a couple coats, even with blotting in between to get longer wear out of it. I also think it's a bit silly to worry about how the lipstick tube looks after some wear and tear, especially when you can buy inexpensive, pretty fabric-covered lipstick cases from Amazon or in many Asian markets. I do agree that the lipstick is a bit dry, but I don't really mind that, because drier lipsticks tend to feather less and I use a waxy lip balm as a primer for many red lipsticks.

  16. I totally agree. This lipstick is TERRIBLE, take my advice and shell out the extra dollars for the department store brands. It makes a world of difference. I reviewed this lipstick too in my blog along with some GREAT lipsticks: litlust.blogspot.com

  18. I had seen this on a friend of mine and asked her for brand and color. I am not a fan of red myself but I wanted to try it because I wanted a change. I immediately went out and bought it at Ulta. I put it on in the car and then went shopping and got a compliment from a stranger saying, she Loved my red lip color and great I looked and how it's so hard to find a good red! I really Love this color and recommend giving it a try:)
