If I remember it correctly, the Crushed Lip Color was released back in 2018 (hard to keep track as the brand put out lots of new stuff). Knowing Bobbi Brown makes great lipstick formula (colors... not so much), I was pretty interested in the range.
The shades available from Sephora are predominantly pink, red and berry (aka auntie shades) but I managed to find something that's more younthful and light hearted...At least on the back of my hand.
Weeks after I bought the full sized Babe...Sephora started offering them as gift with purchase mini. Anyway, the smaller is an exact mini take (not simplified or cheapened out)of the standard tube.
I ended up with two shades - Babe (a neutral rose that's slightly creamy) and Ruby (clear brownish red stain). Another reason I got Babe was that I had just rewatched the movie (one about pig) and the name sounded endearing.
While Babe looked healthy and rosy with the store lighting, it becomes brighter and the creamy quality shade turned into
slight white base.
It could be my own coloring but I just don't like that it turned a brighter shade of rose pink on my lips...I prefer rosey shades with a bit more earthy warmth.
Babe ended up another pink mauve shade that looks dated and uptight. This is something Dolores Umbridge would wear on a casual Friday.
Complaints about the color and white base aside, I do love the formula: While each swipe is very thin and stain like, the formula is actually moisturizing and forgiving... Damn, I wish they can hire Gucci Westman, Igari Shinobu or those folks from Canmake to create the colors (not someone who still lives in the 90s).
I found it especially frustrating that some brands (Cle de Peau, Shiseido, UK Suqqu, Bobbi Brown and Estee Lauder) would formulate these wonderful lipsticks only to ruin it with shades that just look a little off.
Ruby (gift with purchase, I wouldn't buy this shade) is a brownish red, with a clear base this time (from my personal experience, brownish shade look better with some opacity).
I forgot to take glamour shot while it was brand new.
Bobbi Brown Ruby - Such amazing concept of crushed berry stain (the cosmetic chemsist just perfected the idea) but this shade looks off again. There is nothing wrong with grown up aesthetics but it seems that Bobbi Brown has been targeting the 45-70 age group.
Sorry to hear that you don't love the colors but they do look very pretty on you lips! I agree with you that BB lippie formulas are pretty awesome (I still love my Russian Doll lipstick) but the colors are lackluster. I like pinky-red lippies and have so many but I think I like the ones withouth white base. (LOL at the Dolores Umbridge bit)
ReplyDeleteI do kind of like the Lux lipstick range but again... A very good lipstick formula with white base (that I don't reach for) is no better than a less luxurious formula that I actually wear.
DeleteHahahahaha the 45-70 age group.
ReplyDeleteHave you tried her new products? I realized I don't own any makeup from BB but I have the cleansing oil (it's supposed to be calming). I've always thought her products are overpriced
woops sorry not new. Other* products
DeleteI kind of want to try their sheet lipstick (one with skinny black tube) but I am hesitant...I have a near 100% of lipsticks from western highend brand. It's not like they are bad, from brands like Clarins, Chanel, Laura Mercier, Urban Decay...I would end up with those but never reach for those shades. Now I kind of want to skip those alltogether because it's better than buy something for 50 bucks, used it twice (for the blog) then try to detash it for 8 bucks....
Deletewhoa do you sell your lipsticks? I guess I end up tossing mine but the high end ones I usually keep even if it's not being used
DeleteI am more attracted to packaging now though so I try to only buy lipsticks that are pretty inside and out :P
DeleteFor the highend ones I used to just keep them in my Cold Palace (forever) but some shades are so unflattering it pisses me off looking at them ...Tom Ford lipstick are pretty but I would never use it anyway (selling doesn't really make profit though since I charge like 9-10 a piece. The selling fee, bubble mailer and postage add up to 7 dollars already.
Deleteomggg you should try to return the expensive ones if you can. although I guess they just toss it?
Deleteshit is esspensive
I don't think I ever return makeup...unless I absolutely hate it (only item I returned was wander beauty powder foundation...this was worse than $13 drugstore ones from Japan)...
DeleteI actually prefer the Asian way. Try it in store, buy it, if it look unflattering (just own up to it and avoid that brand in the future)...The American way is too wasteful and you end up buying stuff you don't need because "I can always return".
that's really good! I try to only return stuff that is completely new (bc I decided it's too expensive or something) bc I know they will just toss the products and it will go to waste. I have been practicing buying less so I was really "good" this Sephora sale (lol)
